On March 19, Maverick China's co-founder, Edmund Hung gave a presentation at a mobile payment forum organized by the Telecom Research Project Hong Kong (TRP) and KPMG . The forum brought together a variety of industry experts to discuss the development of m-payments in China and included presenations from payment companies (Smartpay, UMPay, Octopus, Qpay), Citibank, and the China E-Commerce Association of the MII. On December 3rd, Maverick China's Edmund Hung attended a Mobile Monday event in Beijing focused on the mobile internet. Presentations and a roundtable discussion were led by representatives from Tencent, Nokia, and Baidu. While neither of the three presenters offered any ground-breaking announcements or industry insight, the session did offer a look into the three company's differing roles and attitudes about how to translate their current business model into the mobile internet market. The general consensus of the event, although left unsaid by presenters, was clear: the mobile internet presents a new set of problems in terms of delivery, content, and monetization that current major players have yet to solve. |
