TMT Case Study - China Market Entry for a Large Foreign Telecom Operator

The client, already with a small representative office in China, looked to us to provide an independent analysis of market opportunities available to them in China. Based on our study, we provided the client with strategic recommendations for both short-term and long-term business development in China.

Research topics

  • An industry overview of the main Chinese operators and WVAS providers in China.
  • A summary of the government regulations related to foreign operators doing business in China.
  • Projections regarding key industry disruptors - such as 3G and operator restructuring - which could change the market environment for foreign operators in China.
  • A competitive overview of the foreign telecom operators doing business in China, included cooperation agreements, wireless value-added services, joint-ventures, R&D centers, equity investments, and representative offices.

Recommendations & action plan

A thorough analysis of the market environment was followed by a SWOT analysis of the client itself. We closely analyzed the client's past and current attempts to do business in China, and compared it with what other foreign operators were doing in China.

Based on our findings regarding both the client's internal and external environments, we provided a comprehensive list of opportunities available to foreign operators in China, and our client-specific recommendations on which opportunities to pursue. We also mapped a near-term and long-term action plan for the client to effectively target specific market segments.

Methodologies

Our research consisted mainly of first-hand interviews with both Chinese and foreign telecom operators, Chinese WVAS providers, and government contacts. During the 8-week project, we maintained close contact with the client through email, telephone, and through periodic draft submissions of the research as it was done. Upon completion of the project, we conducted a presentation of our findings at the client's Beijing representative office to top-level management, and re-convened with the client to discuss our recommendations for the next steps.
