YeePay's Merchant Ranking Competition Revisited

Recently we looked at Yeepay's merchant ranking competition. At the time, Yeepay had only been running the activity for two weeks; few merchants had signed up, and many participating sites had not added the Yeepay voting banner to their sites. Almost a month later, more than 300 merchants have signed up and 150,000 votes have been cast.

C2C auction website Eachnet is currently the top vote-getter, but without the voting banner on it. When we checked, it had received over 15,000 votes – more than 6,000 ahead of the next company. As the picture below shows, voters can place one, two, or ten votes:

  • One vote: Each IP can vote for one merchant within 24 hours; voters are not eligible for any prizes from Yeepay.
  • Two votes: Only YeePay users are eligible; each voter gets two entries into the drawing for prizes from YeePay.
  • Ten votes: Only YeePay users are eligible; each voter makes a contribution of RMB 10 through YeePay to the Red Cross Society of China and is given ten entries for the prize drawing.

Netease reports that Eachnet has helped Yeepay to launch this activity. In September 2007, Yeepay became Eachnet's exclusive payment platform provider, replacing PayPal. It seems likely that Eachnet, which doesn’t even have the YeePay banner on its site, is getting the high vote total by asking for donations on behalf of the Red Cross.

The Eachnet-Yeepay partnership competes with Alibaba Group's Taobao-Alipay combo. Alibaba holds a similar contest for "e-Businessmen of the Year", the winners of which are announced at the company’s popular Alifest event in Hangzhou.
