For several years the official launch or the trial launch of TD-SCDMA and the subsequent 3G licenses issuance has been "right around the corner". Currently it seems like the technology is actually ready.

But in order to offer a bit of perspective, we have collected a few examples of past announcements that turned out to be well off the mark.

For several years the official launch or the trial launch of TD-SCDMA and the subsequent 3G licenses issuance has been “right around the corner”. Currently it seems like the technology is actually ready.

But in order to offer a bit of perspective, we have collected a few examples of past announcements that turned out to be well off the mark.

2000-12-14: China to Launch 3G Mobile Network in 2003

China is expected to construct the third generation (3G) mobile telecommunications commercial networks around 2003, officials from the Ministry of Information Industry disclosed.

2001-08-10: China to launch 3G services by mid-2002

China will begin to roll out commercial 3G (third-generation) mobile services based on TD-SCDMA (Time-Division Synchronous Code-Division Multiple Access) technology from the middle of next year, with hundreds of thousands of subscribers expected to sign up for 3G services by the end of 2002, according to Klaus Maler, general manager of TD-SCDMA at Siemens AG, a supplier of the technology.

2002-11-01: Datang ready to launch TD-SCDMA in 2004

Datang, one of the developers of TD-SCDMA, said China’s homegrown TD-SCDMA next generation mobile technology standard will be ready for commercial use in the second half of 2004.

2003-01-02: China’s 3G Standard Not Ready Till ‘04 -Developer

Lu Tingjie, involved in the group that prepared a report on 3G mobile technology for the Chinese government, said 3G licenses would definitely be issued in 2003. The likely winners he said would be China Telecom, China Netcom, China Mobile and China Unicom.

2004-06-23: TD-SCDMA Deployment in Mid-2005: Offiical

“I’m fully confident that a complete product lineup of TD-SCDMA will be ready for commercial use by next June,” said Zhang Qi, director-general of the Ministry of Information Industry’s Department of Electronics and Information Product Administration.

“Operators’ deployment of (3G) networks will not be delayed.”

2004-12-01: TD-SCDMA ‘on track’ despite trial hiccups

Chen Jin-qiao, director of the Institute of Telecommunication Research, a division of the Mll’s China Academy of Telecommunication Research, said he was not disappointed with the results of the trial, revealed in early November at a 3G conference in Beijing, in which the technology showed problems with network stability and core reliability.

“There are always problems in developing any standard,” he told Telecom Asia. “Once you commercialize it, you can deal with the problems one by one.”

Chen said he expects TD-SDMA products could see commercial launch in the second half of 2005, and that, assuming a theoretical commercial launch of all three 3G technologies by the end of next year, TD-SCDMA could account for 20% of the 3G market and 25% of revenues by 2010.

2005-04-20: Group wants TD-SCDMA to go global this year

TD-SCDMA, China’s homegrown 3G standard, will be heavily promoted as an international standard this year, the TD-SCDMA Forum said.Wang Jing, secretary-general of the TD-SCDMA Forum also said “we will enhance our promotion activities this year to better expose the technology to the international market.”

We believe it‘s the right time to do the promotion as the technology is developing extremely fast and reaching maturity,” he said.

2005-05-20: China to let market decide 3G standards and timeframe - MII

China will issue policy governing third generation mobile telecommunications (3G) at the “proper time” for the market, China‘s Ministry of Information Industry (MII) said.

2005-07-25: China telecommunication conditions basically ready to launch 3G

[Reports] said the homegrown 3G standard, TD-SCDMA is now ready for commercialized use.

2005-12-29: China reveals 3G agenda

Xi Guohua, vice minister of the MII, revealed at an earlier conference that it is time to issue 3G licenses, and the homegrown TD-SCDMA standard should be adopted and run by a strong operator. China is likely to issue its first 3G license to China Telecom Co., Ltd. in 2006, adopting the homegrown TD-SCDMA standard, according to experts‘ analysis of the speech made by Xi.

2006-01-09: China’s Homegrown 3G Standard Ready For Network

The TD-SCDMA technology is stable and China is prepared to establish a 3G network on this standard, the People‘s Daily said.

2006-02-15: China to Qualcomm: er, you and whose army?

China’s home-grown 3G standard TD-SCDMA is on course for a hard launch this year, and to prove it, its representative industry body the TD-SCDMA Forum showed off a range of handsets and vendors at 3GSM this week.

2006-09-20: China to launch large-scale TD-SCDMA commercial trial in Octobercolo

According to reports by Interfax, China will launch a large-scale commercial trial of its homegrown 3G standard TD-SCDMA in October or November this year, citing an unnamed Datang Mobile official; Datang Mobile is the principal developer of TD-SCDMA technology in the People’s Republic. An official from the TD-SCDMA Forum confirmed the report, adding that over 20,000 users in twelve cities will be involved in the trial.
